Education and career Smith received his BS and MS degrees at the University of Wisconsin Madison and his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. He joined San Francisco State University as an assistant professor in 1992 and became a full professor in 1999. In 2002 Smith moved to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he is a distinguished professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. He is the founding director of the Center for Tropical Research and a founding co-director of the Congo Basin Institute.
