Key takeaways

  • Urban areas in Finland belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Urban areas in Finland to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Urban areas in Finland from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

In Finland, an urban area or statistical locality (Finnish: taajama, Swedish: tätort) is defined as a cluster of dwellings with at least 200 inhabitants. It may be a city, town or larger village and is a purely statistical concept, not defined by municipal or regional boundaries. The largest urban area in Finland is the Helsinki urban area with over 1.3 million inhabitants in 2019. It extends across Helsinki as well as ten other municipalities in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The second largest is the Tampere urban area with about 342,000 inhabitants in 2019, and the third largest is the Turku urban area with about 278,000 inhabitants in 2019. The presence of urban areas is used to regulate traffic, with a default of 50 kilometres per hour (31 mph) speed limit inside an urban area and 80 kilometres per hour (50 mph) outside. Each major road leading in or out of an urban area is marked with a road sign.

List Listed are the 100 largest localities or urban areas in Finland on 31 December 2019. The list is based on data from Statistics Finland that defines an urban area as a cluster of dwellings with at least 200 inhabitants.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Urban areas in Finland

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Urban areas in Finland claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Urban areas in Finland before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Urban areas in Finland ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Urban areas in Finland

In research
Urban areas in Finland appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Urban areas in Finland in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Urban areas in Finland is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Finland geography stubs, Types of administrative division, Urban areas in Finland, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Urban areas in Finland outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
