Early life and education Warner Vincent Slack was born in 1933 in East Orange, New Jersey. He was an active child, participating in basketball and football. Slack graduated from Mount Lebanon High School in 1951 and attended Princeton University, where he played junior varsity football. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955 and subsequently attended Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, obtaining his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 1959.
