Key takeaways

  • Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

The Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies is a bone pendant decorated with an engraved drawing of a wolverine, probably from the cave of Les Eyzies, Dordogne, France. The pendant is from the late Magdalenian period and around 12,500 years old. It now forms part of the Christy Collection in the British Museum (Palart 102), where it is normally on display in Room 2. Between 7 February - 26 May 2013 it was displayed in the exhibition at the British Museum Ice Age Art: Arrival of the Modern Mind

Features The pendant is made from a shaped bone, about 1.5 mm thick. There is a hole at one end to enable it to be worn on a string as a pendant or part of a necklace. It may also have been suspended on other things, such as posts. Both sides are smooth. The pendant has an engraving of a wolverine featuring a distinctive bear-like face, pointed nose, small ears, heavy body and hairy paws. It appears to be walking to the left. There is a diagonal line across the animal's shoulder which may be a spear. The pendant is broken and it is possible that the missing piece showed another figure. No longer widespread, at the time of the last Ice Age, the wolverine was a competitor with humans for food sources. They were also a useful source of fur - especially as the fur is naturally resistant to frost.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies

In research
Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Art of the Upper Paleolithic, Bone carvings, Mammals in art, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Wolverine pendant of Les Eyzies outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
